Build – Operation Meraki ReFocus

ReFocus is a photography and video experiential therapy program focused on helping Veterans navigate their trauma through storytelling. This program aims to create a bridge to traditional therapeutic services by educating and instructing Veterans on commercial photography and videography concepts and skills. We have had classes in Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania during our time running this program, touching the lives of roughly 300 Veterans. Of those 300, about 180 attend therapy regularly and use their photography to open the conversation about their trauma with groups and providers.

Operation Meraki ReFocus helps ground Veterans and helps them develop healthy channels of expression to bring about an emotional and cognitive shift.

Our hands-on workshops and practical instruction teach Veterans how to conduct a professional photo shoot in studios and natural environments and cover the basics of camera usage, lighting, and conception, with model and photo walk. The workshop concludes with a challenge where Veterans are asked to take five photos that express a word they choose. The goal is to teach Veterans to look through the

camera lens and focus only on the one word they chose. It’s always amazing to see the Veterans’ eyes light up when they give life to the photos they take.
